Are you prepared for the BT ISDN and PSTN switch off?

BT will begin phasing out its ISDN and PSTN network in 2020, with total switch-off scheduled for 2025. Have you considered how your business will be affected?

What are ISDN and PSTN?

PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network), or fixed-line telephones, have been around since the late 1800s and refer to traditional copper-wire landlines carrying analogue voice data. Whilst PSTN has been improved over the years, the basic concept has remained the same for over a century.

ISDN (Integrated Service Digital Network) was first launched in the 1980s and is the original ‘high-speed’ internet service. A circuit-switched telephone network system, ISDN allows voice and data to be transmitted across the same digital lines simultaneously.

Why are BT switching off ISDN and PSTN?

Simply put, ISDN and PSTN have become outdated and overtaken by more advanced forms of broadband connection, like DSL, WAN and Cable Modems. BT has invested a lot of money in VoIP technology, which offers greater scalability, flexibility and features than either ISDN or PSTN. Financially, it makes little sense for BT to continue investing time and effort into networks that are becoming obsolete for meeting the future demands of businesses.

How to prepare your business for the switch-off

Whilst the ISDN network will not be totally shut down until 2025, you will be unable to purchase systems that use ISDN or PSTN from 2020. If you already have a ISDN or PSTN phone system in place, now is a good time to consider upgrading to VoIP.

VoIP phone systems offer an excellent range of benefits, and according to a survey by TalkTalk Business, 25% of businesses said that switching to a VoIP phone system reduced their spend by more than 50%!
