Microsoft to stop updating server 2008 in the New Year

Microsoft has announced it will no longer support Windows Server 2008 after 14th January 2020. This means there will no longer be releases for new functionality, updates and, perhaps most importantly, security fixes. Staying on this server therefore means you leave your organisation open to ever increasingly sophisticated data thieves and outdated systems.

Migrate your server to protect your data

To stay ahead of the game and to protect your precious data, it’s never advisable to use outdated software with archaic functionality or that no longer receives security updates. So, as the looming new year deadline approaches, there has never been a better time to take this opportunity to migrate your server to something newer, more modern and up to date.

Migrating shouldn’t affect the functionality of your IT systems and will give you access to all the latest technologies and developments available so your organisation can stay one step ahead of the competition.

Your server migration options

Microsoft are encouraging businesses currently using Server 2008 and 2008 R2 to migrate to Azure for increased security, performance and innovation. Microsoft also claim that by migrating to Azure, businesses could save a huge amount of money with free extended security updates and optimised infrastructure.

Azure is a ‘cloud’ based computing platform which stores your documents and applications online instead of on your computer’s hard drive. Cloud based servers like Azure are usually more secure, dependable and flexible than other versions and as there are no physical machines, worries about equipment failures and theft are virtually eliminated.

There are many options for server migration to choose from, including non-Windows alternatives. Businesses need to understand what role Server 2008 is playing for them at the moment and what they need out of their replacement in the future.
